crawling

February 23, 2026
I spent today crawling in the attic. My attic has about 3.5' clearance at its highest point, and is completely unfinished; this means moving carefully between the 24" spaced joists. I alternated crawling on front and scooting on back to make it less tiring, and when near the highest point, I could kinda squat and step with a bent over head and back.

I was installing some conduit and Cat6 for PoE cameras. I hate the look of wires running along the eaves, so my plan is to penetrate the side of the house just under the eaves where the camera will be installed, and feed the wire out. I have open soffits so there is nothing in my path, with the exception of the usual cable fishing difficulties.

I installed ~300ft of cable today. My normal helper was busy, so I made many trips back and forth from the attic to the inside of the house drop point to feed new runs up. I have a 1000ft spool, and I really need to get a setup where it can spin freely, avoiding the need to unspool some onto the ground and hope it doesn't snag when doing solo work. Staying in the attic isn't so bad, it's getting in and out that is the hard part. My house was built without central heating (or any form of cooling), so the ducting added later was strewn everywhere and requires some insane Twister like poses to navigate around.

I've gotten the cables to the various corners of the house, later this week I will penetrate the stucco and pull them through. My plan is to seal the penetrations with UV rated silicone caulk. I've seen grommets marketed for this purpose, but am not impressed with their lack of water ingress capabilities. My thinking is that with a small drip loop and the caulk, the penetration should be just as water ingress resistant as the stucco itself. If you have a non-caulk solution that you like, let me know (even if that solution is grommets, I am willing to be convinced).

In other news, today is 31 days since my last day of work. Something in my mind is finally starting to change. I'm no longer waking up each day trying to remember that thing I definitely have to do today. Instead, I'm much calmer when I wake up, and in a better overall mood. It's easier for me to think about interesting things instead of obligations. Looking forward to more changes of this type.
